about

"Many welcomes" (I Dansè or Adansè in Djoula) refers to the warm and generous welcome that Burkinabè afford to strangers. This composition is based on a dancing rhythm of the Lobi ethnic group and the title pays homage to this character trait of many of the Burkinabè and to the festive mood that often takes them. Most Burkinabè I met on my journeys there are proud that you are visiting their country and realise the many miles you have travelled (not to mention the expense incurred) to come and see them. The contrast with the chilly selfishness you're likely to encounter in western societies is striking. It's hard to be alone in Burkina Faso, and also dangerous, given that the system is based on mutual help from friends and family. Finding yourself alone is a real fear and is more likely even than in Belgium to lead to destitution. On the other hand the need to be alone occasionally is still a rather vague notion in Burkina, with so much interest being shown! In the "Welfare States" of our "Fortress Europe", misery is contained by welfare handouts that maintain deep isolation and dependency to the system. Even if this form of social organisation has many positive aspects and even if in Belgium wealth is more evenly distributed than in Burkina, one of the perverse effects of the top-down approach in Welfare States is the waning of grassroots mutual support, which is such a feature of Burkina.
